Yeh we had to. Take the cable apart. Empty out potato from the camping supplies. Flatten the can and fold over several times. Cut a hole with sharp screwdriver and hammer in folded metal. Poke cale thru hole. Refit cable to clutch.

It was a Sunday so no garages were open. So, I had to get my engineers head working.

It was aluminium really. Scirocco's were famous for the steel around the clutch cable breaking and the cable would fall through.

We fixed it with a tin can for dried potato. Sure made the villagers stop and look what we were doing.

I seem to remember visiting there (Frankfurt) one day on holiday. Our VW Scirocco broke down on the way when the clutch broke!!!
